Here in Edinburgh Libraries we’re very proud of our Japanese collections, so we’re especially pleased to be hosting a unique exhibition of modern Japanese art fans from the world renowned Ishizumi Company.
Ishizumi & Co, a bespoke fan maker, was established in 1881 in Kyoto (a city with twinning links to Edinburgh). Historically Ishizumi fans have been used and enjoyed by high society ladies in Europe and America. King Edward VIII was also, an, er, ‘fan’ and placed orders to Ishizumi & Co. by sending his private secretary Sir Godfrey Thomas all the way to Kyoto.
The fans themselves are exquisite works of art applying both the finest painting on the fan leaf, and craftsmanship of the fan body. The selection on show in Central Library are all from the last seventy years and have been chosen personally by Kanji Ishizumi, a sixth generation member of the company. All the fans will be available for purchase.
The exhibition is free and runs from 2-10 April in Central Library. You can find out more about the history of the fans, as well as view some stunning artwork, on the Ishizumi web site.
