OverDrive Android app


1. On your Android phone or tablet click on the Play Store, search for OverDrive and select to download it.  Click to Open when finished downloading

2. If you already have an OverDrive account click on Sign In.  If you do not have one, click on Sign up. NB If you are 13 or under do not create an account – click on the “I am under 13 years” link instead

3. Enter your name, email address and create a password. Click Sign Up. You will be sent a verification email to your email address – click on the link to verify your account

4.You should now be faced with a blank screen. Click on the Add a Library button 

5.Type Edinburgh into the search box and click on Search

6.Choose your local library and then click on Edinburgh Libraries to access the catalogue

7. To access the Kids & Teen Overdrive site rather than the main site, click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right hand side on the screen and then click on Kids & Teens NB. if you are holding your tablet lengthways rather than upright, there will be a Kids & Teens button on the home page and no menu button at right-hand side)

8. Click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right hand side on the screen and then on Sign In. Login with your library card number and PIN and click on Sign InNB. if you are holding your tablet lengthways rather than upright, there will be a Sign In button on the home page)


How to download ebooks & eaudiobooks
1. Open up the app and click on the Add a title + button to take you to the OverDrive catalogue

2. Browse through the books by-

• Looking at the collections on the home page

• Accessing all the collections - click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right hand side on the screen and then on Collections (or if holding your tablet lengthwise, there will be a Collections button on the home page)

• Using the Search box to search for titles and authors

3. When you find a title you want, click on the cover, then click on Borrow 

4. Click on the Go to Loans button. You will be taken to your Loans where you can click to Download your book

5. To read your books,tap on the main menu button (top left-hand corner of the screen) and choose Bookshelf 

6. Your books will be displayed on your bookshelf. Tap on the cover of the book you want to open

Navigating ebooks
1.  To progress through the book swipe the screen from right to left to turn the pages. The book will open up at the last page you leave it on

2. To access the contents page, tap the centre of the screen and then the button in the top right-hand corner of the page

3. To close down the book and access the catalogue to look for new titles, tap the centre of the screen, then tap the Menu button (top left-hand corner) and choose Edinburgh Libraries

Navigating audiobooks
1. From your bookshelf click on the cover of the audiobook. The book will begin to play, 
although it will take a few minutes to finish downloading the whole audiobook. You can exit the app and the content will continue downloading

2. Play and pause buttons can be found in the centre of the screen (on the book cover), forward and reverse buttons can be found at the bottom of the screen. The audiobook will immediately start playing again from the point you last reached

3. Use the timer function to set the audiobook to play for a certain amount of time (useful for bedtime reading)

4. If you want to bookmark certain bits in the book to go back to, you can use the Bookmarkbutton (ribbon) and then access your bookmarks from the Chapters section at the top right-hand corner of the screen

5. Audiobooks will continue playing even if you use other applications on your iPhone or iPad

How to return books early
1. If you have checked out a book, 
but not downloaded it you can select Return Title from your Loans 

2. If you have downloaded the book to your app, when you open up the app the books you have downloaded will immediately be displayed. Press down on the cover of the book until a box appears with a Return to Library option. Click on Return to Library to return the book early

3. Alternatively there may be an Edit button on the top right-hand side of your bookshelf. Tap Edit and then select Return

How to renew items
Users can renew a book if no other users have reserved the title. The renew option becomes available from a link beside the book in your account Loans three days before the title is scheduled to expire. Click on the Renew link and when the loan 
expires it will be reissued to you (please note you may need to download it again). If the book has been reserved by another reader there will be the option to Request Again which will place you back on the holds list.

How to change the font, size & background colour
1. Open up the book you wish to read. Tap quickly in the middle of the page and a toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen

2. Click on the Aa button and this will allow you to change the size of font, font type and background colour of the screen

3. Click on the sun button to adjust the brightness of the screen

4. Click on the Tools button to change the way the text appears on the screen i.e. line spacing, alignment etc

5.  Tap in the centre of the page again to remove the toolbar options
