INSTALL FREE APP

1. From the main screen, put your finger on the top right corner of the screen and 'swipe' your finger down to bring up the Settings menu. Press: Security > Device > Allow installation of Applications (from unknown devices)> select ON

2. From the main screen click on the link to Shop then on Apps (at top of screen)

3. In the Search Appstore box at the top of the screen type OverDrive and click on magnifying glass to search for it

4. Click on the link for OverDrive Media Console (should be the first one – a blue box with a white O)

5. Click on the yellow Free button and then on the green Get App button. It will say Purchasing and will take a few seconds to install. Click to Open when finished downloading

6. If you have an OverDrive account click on Sign In.  If you do not have one, click on Sign up. NB If you are 13 or under do not create an account – click on the “I am under 13 years” link instead

7. Enter your name, email address and create a password. Click Sign Up. You will be sent a verification email to your email address – click on the link to verify your account

8. You should now be faced with a blank screen. Click on the Add a Library button 

9. Type Edinburgh into the search box and click on Search

10. Choose your local library and then click on Edinburgh Libraries to access the catalogue

11. To access the Kids & Teens site rather than the main site, click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right-hand side on the screen and then click on Kids & Teens NB. if you are holding your tablet lengthways rather than upright, there will be a Kids & Teens button on the home page and no menu button at right-hand side)

12. Click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right-hand side on the screen and then on Sign In. Login with your library card number and PIN and click on Sign In. NB. if you are holding your tablet lengthways rather than upright, there will be a Sign In button on the home page)

 

USING THE APP

How to download ebooks and eaudiobooks
1. Open up the app and click on the Add a title + button to take you to the OverDrive catalogue

2. Browse through the books by -

l• Looking at the collections on the home page

• Accessing all the collections - click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right hand side on the screen and then on Collections (or if holding your tablet lengthwise, there will be a Collections button on the home page)

• Using the Search box to search for titles and authors

3. When you find a title that you’d like click on the cover then click on Borrow 

4. Click on the Go to Loans button. You will be taken to your Loans where you can click to Download 

5. To read your books, tap on the main menu button (top left-hand corner of the screen) and choose Bookshelf 

6. Your books will be displayed on your bookshelf. Tap on the cover of the book you want to open

How to navigate ebooks

1. Swipe the screen to move forward in the book

2. Tap the screen to display controls on the top bar including contents button; font/brightness; and bookmarking tool

3. To exit the book tap on the screen so control buttons appear and then click on the OverDrive icon at the top left of the screen and choose Edinburgh Libraries

How to navigate audiobooks
1. The audiobook will play as soon as you click on the cover. Play and Pause buttons can be found in the centre of the screen (on the book cover). Fast forward, reverse and bookmark buttons are located near the bottom of the screen

2. A sliding volume control is near the top of the screen

3. The Navigation button displays the contents pages to allow you to jump ahead in the book

4. The Bookmarks button is where you can access your bookmarks

How to read magazines

1. Look for titles in the collections on the homepage or in the Magazine Reading Room (Click on menu button and then on Magazines or if holding your tablet lengthwise, a Magazines button will be on the home page)

2. Click on the magazine cover

3. Click on Borrow and Borrow again (or if you want to select an earlier edition, click on Select another issue first)

4. Click on Read now in browser

5. Swipe from right to left to go through the magazine, pinch and pull to zoom in

6. Tap the screen to bring up taskbar to access Chapters (articles index) from the menu button; to Zoom; and to exit from magazine by using the browser back arrow (top left-hand corner of magazine)

7. Please note it is not possible to read magazines offline through the OverDrive app or website

How to return early

1. If you have checked out an item, but not downloaded it, you can select Return Title from your Loans 

2. If you have downloaded the item when you open up the app the items you have downloaded will immediately be displayed. Press down on the cover of the item until a box appears with a Return to Library option. Click on Return

How to renew items
Users can renew a book if no other users have reserved the title. The renew option becomes available from a link beside the book in your account Loans area three days before the title is scheduled to expire. Click on the Renew link and when the loan expires it will be reissued to you (please note you may need to download it again). If the book has been reserved by another reader there will be the option to Request Again which will place you back on the holds list.
