OverDrive Windows 8 & 10 app


1. On your Windows device click on the Windows Store or Marketplace, and search for OverDrive 

2. Click on Install and if prompted enter your Windows Live ID

3. Create an OverDrive Account (or sign in if you already have one). There is no need for under 13 year olds to create an account - just click on the Under 13 Continue button

4. Enter your name, email address and create a password. Click Sign Up. You will be sent a verification email to your email address – click on the link to verify your account

5. You should now be faced with a blank screen. Click on the Add a Library button 

6. Type Edinburgh into the search box and click on Search

7. Choose your local library and then click on Edinburgh Libraries to access the catalogue

8. To access the Kids & Teens site rather than the main site, click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right-hand side on the screen and then click on Kids & Teens NB. if you are holding your tablet lengthways rather than upright, there will be a Kids & Teens button on the home page and no menu button at right-hand side)

9. Click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right-hand side on the screen and then on Sign In. Login with your library card number and PIN and click on Sign InNB. if you are holding your tablet lengthways rather than upright, there will be a Sign In button on the home page)

How to download ebooks & eaudiobooks

1. Open the app and click on the Add a title + button to take you to the OverDrive catalogue

2. Browse through the books by -

• Looking at the collections on the home page
• Accessing all the collections - click on the menu button (three horizontal lines) at the right hand side on the screen and then on Collections  (or if holding your tablet lengthwise, there will be a Collections button on the home page)
• Using the Search box to search for titles and authors

3. When you find a title you want, click on the cover then on Borrow 

4. Click on the Go to Loans button. You will be taken to your Loans where you can click to Download your book

5. To read your books tap on the main menu button (top left-hand corner of the screen) and choose Bookshelf 

6. Your books will be displayed on your bookshelf. Tap on the cover of the book you want to open

Navigating ebooks
1. From your Bookshelf click on the cover of the book you want to read

2. To move forward in the book click the right-hand side of the screen (to go back click on the left-hand side)

3. Click the middle of the screen to display reading options. Click the Options button to change colours, font, font size etc. 

4. To bookmark a page tap the middle of the screen and click the  Add Bookmark button (top right-hand side of screen)

5. To go back to the catalogue click in the middle of the screen, then use the back arrow at the top left of the screen

Navigating audiobooks
1. From your Bookshelf tap on the audiobook to open it. It will begin playing

2. The controls at the top of the screen allow you to pause, fast forward and reverse

3. Tap the Bookmark button (far right of the control panel) to bookmark a favourite part. Retrieve bookmarks using Bookmarks button at top right of screen
NB. You can download MP3 audiobooks through the app, but not WMA ones. If you try to download a WMA title you will be prompted to install the OverDrive Windows desktop software

How to return books early
1. From your Bookshelf right click on the book cover. 
Select Return/Delete 

2. Choose Delete and Return to return a book before its expiry date (and free up another book loan for yourself) or just Delete if the books lending period has expired

How to renew items
Users can renew a book if no other users have reserved the title. The renew option becomes available from a link beside the book in your account Loans area three days before the title is scheduled to expire. Click on the Renew link and when your loan expires it will be reissued to you (please note you may need to download it again). If the book has been reserved by another reader there will be the option to Request Again which will place you back on the holds list.
