Much like the fencer who must constantly read and respond to her opponent's tactics during a fencing bout, this debut collection by Mary Jean Chan deftly examines relationships at once conflictual and tender.
This is a beautiful collection of poems about complex family and cultural relationships, queer identity, embodiment and selfhood. It's a really accessible collection so would highly recommend for anyone wanting to read poetry but nervous about where to start. All these poems are easy to understand and a joy to read. One of the major themes in this collection is navigating a difficult family relationship as Chan reflects on the weight of her Chinese cultural heritage to be submissive to her parents wishes balanced against her identity as a queer woman living in the UK. Anyone who has defied their parents expectations will be able to relate! One of the best poetry collections I've read.
