This is quite a short book, rather more of a novella, but certainly not a romance. Our group felt it was more of a tragedy, even though in some ways the main character has a successful life. It is the story of one perfect day in March 1924 and the last time that lovers Jane, a maid, and Paul, the young master about to get married, are together. The story is beautifully told in lyrical but very concise language, requiring the reader to take time to absorb all the meaning which does not appear immediately. Some of our group thought it was rather light and inconsequential, but others appreciated the delicate touch and undercurrents of foreboding. We marked it 8/10.
